There are 4 main types of Bronze – Gunmetal, Leaded Bronze, Phosphor Bronze and Aluminium Bronze of which BMM stock the following:
PHOSPHOR BRONZE – The addition of small amounts of Phosphorous to Tin Bronzes typically of about 0.4 – 1% increases the hardness, wear and strength of the alloys. Sometimes small amounts of lead are added to improve the bearing properties. This will reduce the strength but be of advantage where extra rigidity would be an advantage.


ALUMINIUM BRONZE

 

Aluminium bronzes are alloys made from 77 – 93% copper and Aluminium from 6 – 12%. Smaller amounts of nickel, iron, manganese and silicon are added to exploit different metallurgical characteristics for different applications. For example, adding Aluminium to copper improves the strength and corrosion resistance. Nickel adds to the corrosion resistance and raises the proof stress. Manganese stabilizes the metallurgical bête phase and improves the tensile strength. Iron refines the grain size once again adding to the strength. And, silicon improves the machinability, corrosion resistance, ductility and hot workability.
